Abstract

The paper presents a novel modelling method for biotechnological processes, based on pseudo
Bond Graph approach. The stages for the design of pseudo Bond Graph models of bioprocesses are
obtained using the reaction schemes and the analysis of biochemical phenomena. These stages are
applied in order to design the Bond Graph models of some prototype bioprocesses: the simple microorganisms
growth process, followed by the aerobic micro-organisms growth process, combined with an
enzyme-catalysed reaction. These models provide information on the time variation of the reaction
products and reactants concentrations. It is assumed that the bioprocesses considered take place into
bioreactors functioning in the following three modes: the batch mode, the continuous mode, and the fedbatch
mode. Several simulations are conducted using 20sim modelling and simulation environment. This
modelling procedure represents a valuable illustration of the power of Bond Graph technique, and can be
used as a base for the development of the models of bioprocesses with high level of complexity.
